The full story

Journalists held a demonstration at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu on October 31, 2026, to protest against police raids on media houses and the arrest of journalists from newsrooms. The protest was organized at the call of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ). Participants displayed placards objecting to government policies that they stated violated press freedom. Speakers at the gathering, including former FNJ senior vice-president Ramesh Bista and senior journalist Devendra Chudal, condemned the police actions, which followed reporting on Prime Minister Balendra Shah allegedly seeking the resignation of Nepal Police Inspector General Dan Bahadur Karki. The FNJ described the police actions as unconstitutional and demanded an immediate halt to state intimidation of the press. The detained journalists were released later.
