The full story

Following the death of an evicted 87-year-old woman, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Madrid on Wednesday. Organised and supported by housing activists and tenants' unions, the protesters marched from the Puerta del Sol square toward parliament, chanting slogans and denouncing the housing crisis. The woman had been hospitalised with anxiety and exhaustion after being removed from her home of more than 70 years by police and social workers. Her eviction had previously sparked a wave of housing protests and an ongoing encampment in Madrid. In response to the growing unrest and the political fallout, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called an early election, while trade unions announced a nationwide general strike over housing issues.
