The full story
A week-long truckers strike in southern Italy over soaring diesel prices has disrupted regional supply chains, blocked supermarket deliveries, and brought buffalo mozzarella production in the Naples region to a standstill. According to Pier Maria Saccani, director of the Consortium for the Protection of Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP, the transport blockade prevented about one million litres of fresh buffalo milk from reaching dairies in a single day, causing an estimated three million euros in losses within 24 hours. Because production rules require the milk to be processed within sixty hours, farmers faced critical storage issues, with some feeding unused milk to animals. In response to the crisis, the Italian government approved new tax breaks and financial measures totaling 540 million euros to support truckers and farmers facing high fuel costs.
