The full story

Demonstrations and general strikes took place across multiple Italian cities, including Rome, Turin, and Vicenza, organised by the grassroots USB trade union. Participants protested against the rising cost of living, war, European rearmament, and the policies of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government. In Rome, participants broke away from a main march toward the Colosseum, throwing objects at law enforcement, overturning rubbish bins for barricades, and setting fires. In Turin, police deployed water cannons and charges after students and activists tried to breach a prefecture cordon. In Vicenza, clashes occurred when demonstrators attempted to occupy a highway bypass. Authorities closed areas near the Prime Minister's office as a precaution, and police used tear gas, water cannons, and batons in response to smoke bombs and fireworks.
