The full story

Teachers, education workers, students, and supporters gathered in Toronto and four other Ontario cities on Saturday to advocate for increased public education funding. Organised by major education unions, the demonstrations took place amid stalled contract talks between the province and education workers, whose previous agreements expired at the end of August. Attendees at Queen’s Park in Toronto voiced frustration over provincial funding levels, citing a recent Financial Accountability Office report indicating a ten-year low in per-student funding. Protesters also called for smaller class sizes, enhanced support for special education students, better working conditions, and measures to address school violence. Education Minister Paul Calandra stated in September that the government provides $30.6 billion in core education funding, while contract negotiations remain paused pending an Ontario Labour Relations Board ruling on bargaining structures.
