The full story

Anti-dam demonstrations in Arunachal Pradesh spread from the Siang basin to the Subansiri valley as a 12-hour bandh turned violent in Daporijo town on October 26, 2026. The protest was called by the All Tagin Students' Union and other local groups against the proposed Menga dam, part of the 1,605MW Subansiri Upper Hydroelectric Project. During the strike, crowds damaged National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) equipment, a company vehicle, and two police vehicles. Two security personnel, including a constable-driver and a CRPF member, were wounded and sent to Ziro for medical treatment. Police responded by conducting a flag march through Daporijo and appealing for public peace. Meanwhile, political parties such as the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee criticized the deployment of additional security forces and demanded dialogue, while authorities noted that peace restoration must precede any force withdrawals.
