The full story
Thousands of Protestant Orange Order members and supporters marched through Portadown town centre on Saturday night, accompanied by more than two dozen bands. The demonstration, organised by Portadown LOL District No 1, was held in support of the district lodge after Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant banned their planned procession along the mainly nationalist Garvaghy Road. That ban followed a request from PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher and came after a two-week standoff when residents blocked the route. Participants and speakers at the rally criticised the government's decision, defended the right to peaceful assembly, and called for the resignation of Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle O’Neill over her participation in the counter-demonstration.
