The full story
On Thursday, October 22, thousands of students, university employees, and academic community representatives marched in Vienna to protest government spending plans for higher education. Organised by the Austrian National Union of Students alongside the public service union, the demonstration took place under the slogan “Red Alert – #SaveTheUniversities!”. Participants demanded an allocation of at least €18 billion for universities for 2028–2030 to counter inflation, warning that the government's planned €16 billion budget would lead to program reductions, poorer student services, and worse working conditions. University administrations supported the action by permitting staff and students to participate. The federal government maintained that its funding decision is final following an agreement by senior officials.
